| Tourist Guide of Riomaggiore |
 |
Riomaggiore, like the other villages of the Cinque Terre, is set between the Ligurian Sea and a steep chain of mountains that is separated from the Apennines in the vicinity of Mount Zatta and descends towards south-east, dividing Val di Vara from the coastal area. Its historical centre, whose origins trace back to the XIII century, is situated in the valley of the Rio Maggiore River, the ancient Rivus Major from which the village takes its name. The village is formed by various parallel rows of typical Genoese tower-houses that follow the rapid course of the river
The new “quartiere della Stazione”(Station District), so called because of the rapid expansion from the second half of the XIX century after the railway line was built, is situated in the contiguous valley of the Rio Finale (Rufinàu), so called since it used to be the landmark between the lands of Riomaggiore and those of Manarola (Manaèa). The two valleys upon which the village stretches out are separated by the steep coast of Campione (Canpiòn); the castle of the village rises on the lower part. The valley of Rio Maggiore is dominated by Monte Verugola (Verügua) whose three mountain tops, depicted in the municipal coat of arms, represent the village's symbol ever since. Riomaggiore is part both of the Mountain Community of the Spezian Coast and the Cinque Terre National Park. |
