| Tourist Guide of Vernazza |
| Moving westwards, past Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza is the second of the five towns that form the Cinque Terre. Its municipality also includes Corniglia, the village that comes next, and is part both of the Mountain Community of the Spezian Coast and the Cinque Terre National Park. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful and characteristic hamlets of Italy. During the XI and XII century, the Obertenghi were lords of Vernazza, subsequently replaced by the Da Passano family. In 1254, Nicolò Fieschi attempted to restore the lost feud with possessions in the Spezia gulf and Val di Vara, but after dominating the land for a short period, in 1276 he had to concede all rights to the territory to Genoa. At the time of the war against Pisa, a small harbor was constructed for the docking of galleys, unique case in the Cinque Terre because of the particular sheltered conformation of the harbor itself. |
