| The town, of ancient origins, is situated in a valley covered with olive trees and pines and opens directly onto the sea. The ridges of the valley run straight into the sea with the Mesco promontory and the extremity of Levanto. The municipality of Levanto is part of the Mountain Community of the Spezian Coast. Part of its territory is also included in the Cinque Terre National Park. A small hamlet called Ceula already existed in Roman times; it was settled on the hills and represented a very strategic junction due to its location. At the beginning of the IX century, the bell tower of the church of Saint Siro (that still exists today), was used as a sighting tower for defense against threats coming from the sea. From the XIII century on, the importance of the hamlet started to decline to the benefit of Levanto that was starting to spread directly along the sea coast. |
